The Opunake Sports and Recreation Trust held a hui on 6 October 2023 with local Sports clubs and community members, as it came to the Trusts attention that Opunake Athletics would not be able to hold their 2023 season due to a lack of volunteers. Great discussions were had at the hui, and it became apparent, the key issues are lack of volunteers/helpers and the lack of funding. Each club was asked what would help them, and they advised a Sports Coordinator who is based at the Facility to help support their committees with the management of their sports/club, promote their events, coordinate helpers and assist with funding applications. Each club advised this would alleviate the pressure from key members that are holding some of the clubs together, as well as enhancing the potential to start new sports that are no longer available in Opunake.
